Produttore, band leader, compositore, session man, Jeff Pevar è noto ai più per la sua lunga collaborazione con David Crosby, che l’ha coinvolto nella sua band solista, nel duo Crosby/Nash, nei più rinomati Crosby, Stills, Nash nel progetto CPR, trio completato da James Raymond, figlio di Crosby (CPR, infatti, è l’acronimo di Crosby Pevar Raymond).
A&B – Penso sia giusto iniziare questa intervista con un ricordo di David Crosby. C’è qualcosa di specifico di David che vorresti condividere con noi? Jeff – Ho così tanti ricordi, “svolazzanti pagine, non ce ne sono due uguali“… è ancora difficile per me sapere che non avrò la possibilità di condividere un nuovo ricordo con Croz a causa del suo impatto sulla mia vita, dato che abbiamo lavorato insieme ad intermittenza per oltre 30 anni. Ci sono così tanti ricordi di quel range temporale… messaggi divertenti lasciati nelle segreterie telefoniche, il suo marchio unico di follia. Era una combinazione così varia: la celebrazione della musica che ci godevamo insieme, intrecciata con la nostra stravaganza e giocosità. Era un’amicizia così unica per me perché spesso era un fratello maggiore, ma anche un mentore, un compagno di band, una dinamica quasi familiare che si incuneava nel rapporto musicale. Per 3 decenni la nostra amicizia ha avuto alti e bassi perché le nostre vite creative ci hanno portato su strade separate. Ci sono stati periodi in cui non siamo stati molto in contatto, ma sono stato felice che negli ultimi anni della sua vita lavorassimo insieme nella SkyTrails Band. E’ stata una vera benedizione riallacciare i rapporti. Una cosa che mi disse, quando rientrai nel suo progetto, e che apprezzai molto, fu dopo il nostro primo spettacolo insieme, dopo che non suonavamo insieme da molti anni: Mi prese da parte e disse: “Sai Jeff, abbiamo cercato per anni di trovare qualcuno che sostituisse le tue scarpe… e ora ci rendiamo conto che… non c’è nessuno!” A&B – Qual è l’aneddoto più divertente e folle accaduto in tour con lui? Jeff – Ridevamo molto… a Croz piaceva ridere e a sua volta faceva ridere tutti noi, quindi facevamo del nostro meglio per cercare di metterlo in quello stato d’animo il più spesso possibile. Uno dei miei ricordi preferiti è stato quando abbiamo fatto un concerto insieme durante il tour SkyTrails ad Halloween. Mi è venuta l’idea che l’intera band si vestisse come David Crosby… così siamo saliti tutti sul palco con i cappelli rossi lavorati a maglia e i baffi, le tute, ecc… è stato esilarante! A&B – Perché, secondo te, i CPR non hanno avuto un grande successo? Ho tutti i vostri dischi (sia in studio che dal vivo) e li trovo meravigliosi. Vi ho anche visti dal vivo e ho avuto l’impressione di una band molto unita: ricordo una versione di “Déjà Vu” con un tuo lunghissimo, meraviglioso assolo di chitarra elettrica. Che band tosta che erano, i CPR… Jeff – È risaputo che la popolarità di un gruppo spesso ha poco a che fare con la qualità della musica. Spesso è così se si investe una notevole quantità di denaro per far arrivare la musica e il marchio al pubblico. Crosby ha spesso commentato di non avere il giovane, vivace, sex appeal dei giovani artisti pop più conosciuti che vendevano molti dischi all’epoca, il che, naturalmente, è uno dei fattori. Oltre al fatto che i CPR abbiano ottenuto un contratto discografico con la Samson Record, che ci è stato utile, è stato un esperimento per vedere se sarebbero arrivati abbastanza guadagni dalle vendite dei dischi. In definitiva, è tutto un azzardo per vedere se una nuova iniziativa sarà abbastanza popolare da far girare gli ingranaggi. Fortunatamente, David ha investito molto del suo tempo e delle sue finanze per sostenere questo progetto in studio, dal vivo, coprendo le spese del tour, i bus turistici, la grande troupe, gli hotel confortevoli, i costi dello studio e tutto ciò che ha portato l’avventura dei CPR ad un livello così professionale. Sarò sempre molto grato a Croz per aver creduto in questo progetto abbastanza da farlo accadere, almeno finché ha continuato. Alla fine, deve avere senso finanziariamente e, anche se non ero a conoscenza delle vendite e dei costi, immagino che tutto fosse semplicemente troppo costoso per continuare a mantenerlo in piedi. Siamo fortunati che sia successo, dato che Croz era abituato a fare tournée in modo confortevole e ad avere una band e una troupe fantastiche. Non credo che avrebbe fatto un progetto come CPR se non fosse riuscito a farlo in quel modo. Immagino che abbia semplicemente fatto il suo corso e siamo passati tutti al capitolo successivo. A&B – Ci sono registrazioni inedite dei CPR (live o in studio) che potrebbero vedere la luce in futuro? Jeff – Tutto ciò che abbiamo registrato insieme lo abbiamo completato e pubblicato, per quanto ne so. A&B – C’è la possibilità che tutti i CD dei CPR vengano pubblicati in formato vinile? Jeff – Alla fine, quella era una decisione di David e sarebbe stato un investimento che avrebbe dovuto fare. A&B – Sei ancora in contatto con James Raymond? Jeff – Sì. Restiamo buoni amici e si è emozionato quando ho aperto una pagina Facebook CPR, dove possiamo condividere storie e informazioni su questa bellissima esperienza che abbiamo fatta assieme e di cui siamo molto orgogliosi. Di recente ho trovato un filmato di noi che provavamo e l’ho inviato a James e abbiamo deciso di pubblicarlo, quindi forse col passare del tempo guarderemo nei nostri archivi e cercheremo di trovare cose da pubblicare, man mano che il tempo passa… ma ci vuole tempo e stiamo tutti lavorando ad altri progetti. A&B – Dato che hai suonato anche con CSN, sei rimasto in contatto con Graham Nash e Stephen Stills? Jeff – In un certo senso, ogni tanto cerco di contattarli entrambi. Ho lavorato con Graham per molti anni, inizialmente in un trio con Graham e David intorno al 1993 e in tour con quel trio diverse volte… anche in tour con la Graham Nash Band nel 2002 e infine nei CSN dopo aver registrato l’ultimo disco di Crosby/Nash. Direi che ho una storia molto più lunga con Graham piuttosto che con Stills, visto che con Graham ho un legame più saldo. A&B – Posso chiederti cosa pensi dei contrasti tra Graham e David? Qual è la tua versione dei fatti? Jeff – Lo ammetto, faccio del mio meglio per non giudicare nessuno dei due perché rispetto il loro diritto ad avere le loro ragioni e i loro sentimenti personali. C’è una storia così lunga, dietro al loro rapporto. Rispetto la loro privacy, quindi non commento, perché non sono affari miei; tuttavia, è stato molto triste essere informato dei conflitti tra loro e ho sempre sperato che li avrebbero risolti quando ne avevano l’opportunità. A&B – Parlando dei tuoi progetti attuali, vorresti raccontarci dell’album “Live from the Archives vol.3 – A concert celebration the music of David Crosby” pubblicato insieme a Marcus Eaton, Rawstars e altri? Jeff – È stato un onore essere coinvolto in quel progetto. Sono amico di lunga data di Francesco e Stefano (Francesco Lucarelli e Stefano Frollano che, assieme a Claudio Maffei, sono gli ideatori del concerto tenutosi il 7 ottobre 2023 al Mammut Club di Roma con Jeff Pevar, Marcus Eaton, Joe Slomp e Inger Nova Jorgensen, compagnia di Pevar. NdA) e mi è piaciuto che abbiano deciso di fare qualcosa per onorare Crosby e che io fossi stato invitato a partecipare. È stata un’opportunità fantastica per celebrare quest’uomo e musicista che tutti amiamo. A&B – Hai progetti solisti attualmente in corso? Jeff – Sì! Stiamo pubblicando un nuovo disco di Jeff Pevar & Inger Nova di cui siamo molto entusiasti, intitolato “Here Me Calling”, che sarà disponibile mentre saremo in Italia per il nostro tour! A&B – Parlaci di questo nuovo progetto… A&B – L’album esplora molti generi musicali: R&B, Rock, Acoustic, Folk, Jazz, & Latin. Chi sono i musicisti coinvolti? Jeff – Poiché sono un polistrumentista, spesso suono molti, o a volte, tutti gli strumenti da solo… chitarre acustiche ed elettriche, basso (tranne una canzone), tastiere, mandolino, percussioni, arrangiamenti di archi e fiati, a volte suono o programmo anche la batteria. Abbiamo invitato alcuni batteristi fantastici a suonare in alcune canzoni. Uno dei nostri migliori amici e batteristi preferiti, Stevie DiStanislao (batterista di CPR, CSN, David Gilmour ecc.) suona la batteria in “Here Me Calling”, “Diamonds”, mentre Steve e io suoniamo entrambi batteria/percussioni nella canzone ispirata a Crosby, “Green Light”. Un altro batterista straordinario di Los Angeles è Joey Heredia, che ha suonato anche nel nostro precedente EP “Anthem”. Joey suona la batteria in “Don’t Give In”, e il nostro amico Joel Rosenblatt, che ha suonato con gli Spyro Gyra per molti anni, è presente in “She Is The City” che ha una gloriosa enfasi ritimica alla fine del pezzo. La ritmica di “Can’t Get Enough” è stata registrata in un fienile in cui facevamo concerti, in una proprietà precedente, quindi in quella canzone Matthew Kriemelman suona la batteria e Jacob Ackerman il basso. All’epoca erano entrambi membri della nostra band. Con la tecnologia attuale, ho deciso di usare pezzi di registrazioni precedenti di fiati registrati per altre canzoni, che ho mixato e abbinato per usarli in “Don’t Give In” e “It Ain’t Like It Used To Be”. Un esperimento divertente! Abbiamo anche incluso una sezione di coro di un pubblico che Jacob Collier ha registrato in uno dei suoi concerti, che ha messo a nostra disposizione per la fine di “Take Your Chances”. Ci piace sperimentare con le idee quando servono alla musica! Inger è la cantante solista principale in questo disco, ma abbiamo anche cantato alcuni duetti e io ho arrangiato tutte le armonie vocali, spesso soltanto ad opera di noi due, ma sperimentiamo con varie combinazioni a seconda di ciò che riteniamo giusto per la canzone. È divertente mescolare e abbinare per provare unici suoni e approcci vocali. Abbiamo invitato un paio di nostri amici a doppiare alcune delle nostre parti vocali in “Take Your Chances” e nella prima canzone, “Can’t Get Enough Of You”, per dare un po’ di varietà. Abbiamo uno studio in casa e oltre ad usare Pro Tools e a registrare la maggior parte delle tracce a casa, ho anche progettato e fatto il mixaggio, sotto la guida dal nostro talentuoso amico, Bret Levick, che oltre a essere un artista straordinario di suo, è stato il mio mentore del processo di registrazione e mixaggio per molti anni. Gli mando i miei mix e lui propone suggerimenti che troviamo inestimabili per realizzare mix finali dal suono migliore. La sua guida è stata fondamentale e siamo stati molto fortunati ad averlo coinvolto.. A&B – Quando uscirà l’album e in quali formati? Jeff – Stiamo lavorando con un’azienda che ha avviato un nuovo modo di ascoltare la musica. Si tratta di schede digitali che contengono le tracce audio e tutto ciò che devi fare è avvicinare la scheda al tuo telefono ove la musica vi viene trasferita magicamente. Poiché stiamo scoprendo che i CD stanno diventando obsoleti, questo è un modo fantastico per andare verso il futuro con questa nuova opportunità. Cerco di stare fuori dalla politica mentre resto concentrato sulla musica, ma con quello che sta succedendo è difficile essere orgogliosi del mio Paese con così tanta divisione e negatività. Non è quello che vogliono molte delle persone di cui mi circondo. Quindi spero che col tempo ci uniremo per rendere il nostro Paese migliore. Tutto ciò è molto preoccupante perché riguarda il mondo intero e spero che le persone si uniscano per prendere decisioni finalizzate a riprendersi il Paese da persone che apparentemente sono interessate solo a se stesse, a fare soldi e ad avere il controllo. Speriamo che le persone in altri paesi non pensino che tutti, negli Stati Uniti, vogliano che le cose vadano così. Prego che possiamo sistemare le cose prima che passi troppo tempo. Already interviewed 9 years ago (HERE), about his first solo album “From the Core“, we met him again today to talk about “Here Me Calling“, a new experience by versatile duo project with Inger Nova, also his life partner.. A&B – I think it’s right to start this interview with a memory of David Crosby. Is there a specific memory of David that you would like to share with us? Jeff – So many memories “fluttering pages, no two a like”… it is still hard for me to know I won’t have the chance to share a new memory with Croz because of his impact on my life, as we worked together on and off for over 30 years. There are so many memories over that period of time… funny messages left on voicemails, his unique brand of craziness. It was such a varied combination of this celebration of music we enjoyed together intertwined with our own wackiness and playfulness. It was such a unique friendship for me because often he was a big brother, combined with being a mentor, a bandmate, quasi-family dynamic that infiltrated the music relationship. For 3 decades our friendship ebbed and flowed because our creative lives brought us to separate roads. There were parts that we weren’t in touch as much, but I was so happy that in the latter years of his life that we were working together in The SkyTrails Band. Such a blessing to reconnect. One thing he said to me when I rejoined his project that I so appreciated was when he pulled me aside after our first show together after not playing together for many years. He said, “Ya know Jeff, we tried for years to find someone to fill your shoes….and we now realize….there just ain’t no one!” A&B – What’s the funniest and craziest anecdote that happened on tour with him? Jeff – We used to laugh a lot…Croz loved to laugh and it would in turn make us all laugh, so we all would do our best to try to get him into that mood as often as possible. One of my favorites memories was doing a gig together on the SkyTrails tour on Halloween. I came up the the idea that the entire band should dress like David Crosby….so we all came out on stage with the knitted red hats and mustaches , overalls etc…it was halarious! A&B – Why, in your opinion, CPR didn’t run? I have all your records (both studio and live) and I think they are wonderful. I also went to you live concert, and I had the impression of a very close-knit band: I remember a version of Déjà vu with a very long, wonderful electric guitar solo by you. What a badass band CPR were… Jeff – It is well known that the popularity of a group often has little to do with how good the music is. Often it is if considerable amount of money is being invested in getting the music and the brand out to the public. Crosby often commented on he didn’t have the young vivacious, sex appeal of the young popular pop artists who were selling a lot of records at the time, which of course, is a factor. Besides CPR getting a record deal with Samson Record, which was helpful to us, it was an experiment to see if enough income from record sales would come in. Ultimately it is all a gamble to see if any new venture will be popular enough to keep the wheels turning. Thankfully David invested a lot of his time and his finances to support taking this project into the studio, out on the road, covering the tour expenses, the tour busses, the great crew, the comfy hotels, the studio costs and everything that made the CPR adventure happen on such a professional level. I will always be very grateful that Croz believed in this project enough to do that to make it all happen as long as he did. In the end, it has to make sense financially and while I was not privy to the sales and the costs, my guess is eventually it just was too expensive to keep it all happening. We are lucky to have it happen at all, as Croz was accustomed to touring comfortably and having a great band and crew. I don’t think he would do a project like CPR it if he couldn’t do it like that. I guess it just ran it’s course and we all moved to the next chapter. A&B – Are there any unreleased CPR recordings (live or studio) that could see the light in the future? Jeff – Everything we recorded together we finished and released, as far as I can remember. A&B – Is there a chance that all the CPR CDs will published in the vinyl format? Jeff – Ultimately that would be David’s decision and would be an investment that David would have had to make. A&B – Are you still in touch with James Raymond? Jeff – Yes. We remain good friends and he was excited that I started a CPR Facebook page where we can share stories and information about this beautiful experience that we both shared together and are very proud of. I recently found some footage of us rehearsing and sent it to James and we agreed to post it, so maybe as time goes on we will look though our archives and try to find things to post, as time moves forward…but that takes time and we are all working on other projects. A&B – since you also played with CSN, have you remained in touch with Graham Nash and Stephen Stills? Jeff – Somewhat, I reach out to contact them both from time to time. I had worked with Graham for many years, initially in a trio with Graham and David around 1993 and touring as that trio a number of times… also touring with The Graham Nash Band in 2002 and finally in CSN after we recorded the last Crosby/Nash record, so Graham and I have much more of a history than Stills and I, so Graham and I have more of a connection. A&B – can I ask you what do you think about the long-running fight between Graham and David? What is your version of events? Jeff – Admittedly, I do my best not to judge either of them because I respect their right to have their personal reasons and feelings. There is such a long history there. I respect their privacy around all that, so I don’t comment about it, as it’s none of my business, but it was very was sad to be made aware of the conflicts between them and I had hoped they would have worked it out while they had the opportunity to. A&B – talking about your current projects, would you like to tell us about the album “Live from the Archives vol.3 – A concert celebrating the music of David Crosby” released together with Marcus Eaton, Rawstars and others…. Jeff – It was an honor to be involved with that project. I am long time friends with Francesco and Stefano (Francesco Lucarelli and Stefano Frollano which, together with Claudio Maffei, are the creators of the concert held on October 7, 2023 at the Mammut Club in Rome with Jeff Pevar, Marcus Eaton, Joe Slomp, Inger Nova Jorgensen, Pevar’s partner) and loved they decided to do something to honor Crosby and that I was invited to be involved. There is a brand new Jeff Pevar & Inger Nova record we are releasing that we are very excited about called “Here Me Calling” and will be available while we are in Italy on our tour! A&B – tell us about this project… Jeff – Inger e io abbiamo appena festeggiato 21 anni insieme, dal giorno in cui ci siamo incontrati. La nostra nuova uscita, “Hear Me Calling”, è una combinazione di canzoni che abbracciano i nostri molti anni insieme. Ad esempio, abbiamo scritto la canzone del titolo “Hear Me Calling” poco dopo esserci incontrati, più o meno quando ero in tour con CPR & CSN. Ci sono canzoni più recenti come “Take Your Chances”, che abbiamo scritto l’anno scorso, quindi tutte le composizioni della nostra nuova uscita le abbiamo scritte insieme, nei nostri molti anni insieme. Proviamo un grande senso di realizzazione nel poter ora condividere queste canzoni, che ci sono vicine e care, con i nostri amici e fan in Italia, mentre realizziamo come i nostri viaggi in Italia siano, e siano stati, un importante catalizzatore per ispirarci con la nostra musica originale! L’ultima volta che siamo venuti in Italia per un tour, quel viaggio ci ha dato l’ispirazione per andare in studio a finire le canzoni su cui stavamo lavorando, che sono diventate il nostro EP di debutto, “Anthem”! Quindi dobbiamo continuare a pianificare viaggi in Italia, così possiamo continuare a portare le nostre registrazioni più recenti da condividere con i nostri amici e fan! Bellissimo!! A&B – The album is eclectic, representing hints of many genres, including R&B, Rock, Acoustic, Folk, Jazz, & Latin. Who are the musicians involved in this album? A&B – when will the album be released and in what formats? A&B – last words for the Italian fans and for the readers of Artists and Bands… Jeff – Many of the people in the US are frightened with what is happening with our government. I try to stay out of politics as I stay focused on music, but with what’s happening it’s hard to feel proud of my country with so much division and negativity. It’s not what many of the people that I surround myself with want. So I am hoping that over time we will unite to make our country better. It all is very concerning as it affects the entire world, and I am hoping people will get together to make decisions to take back the country from people who seemingly only are interested in themselves, making money and being in control. We hope that people in other countries don’t think that everyone in the US wanted things to be like this. I pray that we can straighten things out before too long. |
